How Are Energy Surges Calculated?

An Energy Surge is Nico’s user-friendly term for a noticeable glucose spike - a meaningful upward movement in your glucose curve. Energy Surges help you spot moments where your glucose rises quickly enough to be worth paying attention to.

What Nico Looks For

Nico calculates Energy Surges using your sensor readings in a simple, consistent way:

  1. Your sensor continuously tracks your glucose
Your sensor sends regular readings throughout the day (and night), creating your glucose curve.

  2. We identify a clear “peak”
Nico looks for a point on your graph where glucose is higher than the readings before and after it. That’s considered a peak.

  3. We check what happened right before the peak
Once a peak is found, Nico looks back to find the lowest point (the “low” before the rise).

  4. We check if it's a real surge
If your glucose rose by at least 1.0 mmol/L compared to the lowest point in the hour leading up to that peak, Nico marks it as an Energy Surge.

Why This Matters

Energy Surges aren’t “good” or “bad”, they’re simply a way to flag meaningful changes in your glucose curve. A surge can happen for many reasons, including meals, caffeine, stress, poor sleep, or intense exercise. The goal is to help you notice patterns over time, not to judge any single spike.
